Competitor ad monitoring: a research workflow using public ad libraries
Public ad libraries show creative and activity. They usually do not tell you whether a commercial campaign was profitable.
Begin with official libraries
Search Meta Ad Library and other platform transparency tools using verified brand names and domains. Save the library record and destination page. Coverage and fields differ by platform, market and ad category.
Meta provides additional spend and reach transparency for certain issue, election and political advertising. Do not assume the same data exists for ordinary commercial campaigns.
Code the creative, not just the screenshot
Record audience cue, pain, promise, proof, offer, call to action, format and landing-page destination. Group small variations under a campaign theme so the review reflects strategy rather than asset count.
A long-running ad can justify further investigation, but it does not prove strong return. Campaigns may remain live for many operational reasons.
Follow the click
The landing page often carries the stronger signal: segment-specific language, offer structure, gated content, pricing or a newly emphasized use case. Preserve the ad-to-page relationship and watch whether the destination changes.
Avoid invented traffic and spend estimates
If a source does not expose spend, impressions or clicks for the commercial ad, mark those fields unavailable. Third-party estimates should be labeled as estimates with methodology and date, never presented as platform facts.
Working checklist
Use this in the next review.
- Verify the advertiser and destination domain.
- Save the official library URL and first-seen date.
- Classify audience, promise, proof, offer and format.
- Group variants into campaign themes.
- Inspect and monitor the landing page.
- Never infer spend or performance from creative alone.
