Competitive intelligence for sales: answer the deal, not the entire market
Sales intelligence is useful when a rep can find the right question or response during a deal. Encyclopedic profiles usually fail that test.
Use pipeline evidence to set priority
Track the companies named in opportunities, win-loss notes and call transcripts where permitted. Frequency, deal size and stage matter more than general market visibility.
Keep a separate list of emerging competitors for strategy; do not crowd the live-deal experience with companies reps rarely encounter.
Write guidance for a conversation
Lead with discovery questions and the customer situations where the competitor is strong. Add concise differentiation supported by product or customer evidence. Avoid dismissive claims a buyer can disprove.
Every volatile fact—especially price, packaging and integration coverage—needs a date and source.
Push changes into the existing workflow
When monitoring finds a material change, update the card and notify the owner. Deliver the change in CRM, enablement or the channel sales already uses rather than asking every rep to monitor a new dashboard.
Learn from use
Capture which cards are opened, which questions are copied and where reps still ask for help. Use that feedback to shorten and reorder the content.
